DJI Inspire 2 X5S setup

This is a picture of my amazing bird DJI Inspire 2 X5S in the air shot by @asttiac.
DJI Ispire 2 x5s in the air with New York back, Drone videography services

It is almost a year when I invested in I2 with X5S 5.2K camera with RAW and Prores licenses. It was a huge upgrade after P3P. During the year I also purchased second remote for dual operation, ssd 480Gb memory for dng and prores files, Argtech long range antennas, Laowa 7.5mm, Panasonic 25mm, Olympus 45mm and Olympus 14-42mm lenses, HeliEngadin folding carbon fiber props, drone crate landing mode case, ipad 4 mini, Firecrest ND filters and ring adapter, handles to catch drone in the air, firehouse strobe lights for night flights, Luma cube lights with I2 mount brackets. Also I spent over $1K for aerial drone cinematography courses, remote pilot part 107 preparation and Remote pilot license exam. Having huge cinematography experience and MFA degree in filmmaking I know not only how to fly drone but how to frame and capture cinematic shots.

On July 27, 2017 I operated my drone DJI Inspire 2 X5S from a boat for "Linea Blu" show for Italian RAI TV Channel.

It was a second day operating a drone in NYC harbor for this show. During first day we filmed The Amerigo Vespucci ship which was built in 1931. On that first day I worked together with my friend Eliana. We used DJI Mavic and DJI Phantom 3 Pro. We had to launch from a small boat ant it was very tricky to launch big drone like DJI Inspire 2.

The Amerigo Vespucci is a tall ship of the Italian Navy (Marina Militare) in New York

During second day we had to film New York City sights: Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Ellis Island and a boat that we were cruising on. Eliana wasn’t available and I took my wife Mariya to operate camera and be a PA. This was a first time when I operated Inspire 2 from a boat (Brianna Yacht). First take off wasn't successful and the drone flipped upside down. I tried to take off from the boat’s surface but the boat was shaking on waves. The drone damaged 2 new carbon fiber folding propellers, but they didn't break. So I could continue flying using the same props.

For the rest flights we were taking off and landing using handles and catching the drone in the air. I2 is a beast and my wife and camera operator was scared to do that, but she did perfectly fine.

Operating drone from a boat

We filmed the Statue of Liberty close to the end of our shoot. Here is the map of our flight:

Airdata map of flight around Statue of Liberty

We did few takes with different focal length using Olympus 14-42mm zoom lens and few different movements.

Then we got closer to Ellis Island, to film it and a Police boat from the Statue of Liberty approached us. They politely asked the director what we’re doing and etc. At that time I had the drone in the air filming Ellis Island. We had to land the drone and talk to police. I showed them my FAA license and business card. They got my driver license and went to their boat. When they got back the policeman said, that they didn’t know what to do with us and he called their chef. The chef said to give us a ticket "Violation of Closure Operating Unmanned Aircraft" 36 CFR 1.5F Fine $100 + $30 processing fee. The fine wasn't that big, but I felt that I operated legally and didn't want to pay.

Federal Ticket for drone operations close to the statue of liberty
I did call to the number on the ticket to find out how I can appeal it. They told me do not pay and I'll get invitation to appear in court. That is what I did. After a while I got a letter from the United States District Court with date (December 19, 2017) and time to appear. At the court I spoke with a free federal defender Sylvie. She offered me that they will dismiss the ticket if I'm not going to violate any laws in 6 months. I declined the offer and asked if they can dismiss it now. And I mentioned that there was no law about operating a drone close to the statue of liberty. And I mentioned that FAA added unauthorized drone operations over 10 Department of the Interior (DOI) sites, including the Statue of Liberty on October 5, 2017. Sylvie said that she will do a research on this topic and we will meet again on February 20, 2018. In January I got another letter from the court to appear.

On Feb 20, 2018 I met Sylvie again in the court. She said that she did a research and there were no restrictions operating a drone except the one which became effective on October 5, 2017. She got my print out of FAA restriction from Oct 5, 2017, airdata map of my operation and asked me to wait in a hallway. She went to the court room. She got back in ~10 minutes and said congratulations, your tickets was dismissed!

It is always good to know current laws and restrictions and follow them.

I just love autumn in New York. Every free moment I'm trying to go out and enjoy nature. This year I had few days to spend with my family and enjoy foliage in the Hudson Valley. Also it was a good time to test abilities of 5K RAW and 4K Prores recording formats on my DJI Inspire 2 drone. I wish it would take less space and I would record more... But I was really impressed with the quality of RAW footage from I2.

DJI introduced today a new camera with gimbal Zenmuse X7 for DJI Inspire 2 drone.

Zenmuse X7 camera

Key features:
Super 35 Sensor | 6K CinemaDNG | 5.2K Apple ProRes | 14 Stops of Dynamic Range

Zenmuse X7 lenses

Also DJI made speical light weight carbon fiber lenses for it:
16mm F2.8 ND ASPH (with build-in ND) (24mm on 35mm Equivalent)
24mm F2.8 LS ASPH (with Lens shutter) (36mm on 35mm Equivalent)
35mm F2.8 LS ASPH (with Lens shutter) (53mm on 35mm Equivalent)
50mm F2.8 LS ASPH (with Lens shutter) (75mm on 35mm Equivalent)

Price:
Zenmuse X7 (without lenses) - $2699
DL-S 16mm - $1299
DL 24mm - $1299
DL 35mm - $1299
DL 50mm - $1199

Lens Set 16mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm - $4299

So the total for X7 with 4 lenses - $7000

If you are planning to purchase a new Inspire 2 with X7 + 4 lenses + RAW and Prores licenses it will be $11297 total
+ SSD memory 480G - $899
+ SSD card reader -$149
+ Cendence Remote Controller - $999
+ CrystalSky 7.85" - $850

I think it is a great package for professional filmmakers for this price. Especially if it matches the Red camera quality.

But I'm not sure if I'm ready for the camera upgrade at this moment. X5S can record 5.2K RAW and Prores great quality footage. It is compatible with many affordable MFT lenses. Personally I have 7.5mm f/2, 15mm f/1.7, 25mm f/1.7, 45mm f/1.8, 14-42mm zoom f/3.5-5.6. So I have a great variety from 15mm on 35mm equivalent to 90mm on 35mm equivalent. And I can extend this range a little using crop sensor option for double frame rate recording (48p, 50p or 60p).

I wasn't happy with original plastic props and especially red props problems. After doing few modifications (foam one and crazy glue one) I still had problems with shaking props. Few weeks ago I ordered Heliengadin Carbon fiber folding propellers for my DJI Inspire 2 drone. They are much nicer than standard dji plastic props. They are a little heavier than original props with quick release adapters. The installation didn't take a lot of time. It was easy unscrew quick release mounts and screwing in carbon fiber props. The only hard part was modification of Drone Crates landing mode case. I had to cut out some foam, so my Inspire 2 would fit in the case with installed props.
I did a small performance test after with Olympus 45mm lens.
The whole process you can see in my short video:

DJI Inspire 2 Folding Carbon Fiber Props by Heliengadin (installation and test) from Uladzimir Taukachou on Vimeo.

I would like to do a test with another Inspire 2 and original props. So if you are in NYC, have drone pilot license, Inspire 2 and would like to compare performance - please contact me via my website www.utcinema.com

I ordered 3 46mm Firecrest ND filters 0.6 2 stops, 1.2 4 stops, 2.4 8 stops.
8 stops I'm planing to use in D-log mode with ISO 500.
I tested 1.2 4 stops filter yesterday flying in sport mode with speed up to 75km/h.
A good deal on firecrest website http://www.formatt-hitechusa.com/. Also I used code FREESHIP to get free shipping. I hope these filters are good for the price.
Promo code 50% CIRCFC50

46mm filter is for standart 15mm dji lense for x5s camera. I got a step down ring adapter for Olympus 12-42mm lense and for 45mm lens.
